Welcome to Yoga 101
The intention for this weekend course is for people who have never practiced yoga before. It is an invitation to begin practice with others who, like you, have been wanting to get started with yoga, but are overwhelmed by the array of yoga styles, levels and want to begin at the beginning. The only requirement for this course is a deep desire to get to know yourself better, to be at home in your body and in yourself. Bring your curiosity, your playfulness, you willingness to explore.
Anyone can practice yoga, it is not related to how old you are, whether you’re big or small. How flexible, or how strong you are is irrelevant. You meet yoga simply as you, from exactly this place, you start to dig. We are multi-dimensional beings and yoga is a step by step method, practiced for thousands of years, that supports us as we begin to remove the knots, the tightness, the confining beliefs that limit our lives and block our potential.
We’ll investigate the basic foundations that are universal to all yoga. Our starting point is with the breath, and feeling the synchronizing of breath with movement in the body. We’ll practice the skills of turning our attention inward and begin to dive into the philosophy that supports the physical practice. We’ll learn the building blocks of the sun salutations and the essential movement patterns that are inherent in all yoga – “an underlying web of similarity that connects all approaches”, as Richard Freeman writes, which reveals a “deeply woven interconnectedness.”
